Pick enchantments to work out the cheapest order.

How it works

  • The levels for one merge are, for each enchantment on the book in the right slot, its level × multiplier, plus the prior work penalties of both slots. Each enchantment has its own multiplier, and a book's is half an item's (at least 1).
  • Anything that has been used in an anvil carries a prior work penalty: 0 after no uses, 1 after one, 3 after two, 7 after three, doubling each time. The result has one more use than the larger of the two slots.
  • A step of 40 levels or more is refused in Survival with "Too Expensive!". That is why combining books first, so the item goes into the anvil fewer times, is usually cheaper.
  • We try every possible order and pick the one with the fewest total levels. If a different order leaves the finished item with less prior work, we show it too (later anvil uses cost less).
  • Java and Bedrock only calculate differently when the same enchantment is on both sides (Bedrock counts only the levels gained). For the fresh books in this calculator, results differ only for Impaling, whose multiplier differs, and for enchantments missing from one edition (Sweeping Edge).
